We all want a social life, but spending a day hungover at the office is not fun. Forget “hair of the dog” or convoluted hangover cures with 16 ingredients. Here are 5 tried and true ways to kick that nasty hungover to the curve.

Water

  Hydrate

The number one cause for the icky feeling you get after a night of drinking is plain ol’ dehydration. Alcohol is a diuretic, causing you to go to the bathroom a lot and lose the precious fluids your body needs to operate correctly. The solution is a simple formula: Before going to bed after a night of drinking, make sure you drank at least one glass of water for every pint of beer, wine glass or shot you’ve had. Yes, that could mean a lot of water in one go and a few more nightly trips to the bathroom. However, this is guaranteed to save you from that crappy “the world is wrong” feeling when you wake up.

Martini

Stick to one kind of alcohol, preferably a clear one.

You know the reason that different types of alcohol have their own distinct flavors? It’s because of chemicals that are created during the productions. These add color and taste to the drinks, but are essentially poison (for example Acetone – more commonly known as paint thinner). Your liver can filter most of these, but drink too much and your liver can’t keep up. Try to choose one type of spirit and stick with it throughout the night. Since clear spirits such as vodka or gin have less of these, they’ll probably be kinder to your liver, and you might be able to reach the morning relatively unharmed.

Bananas

  Eat a banana for breakfast.

While you’re drinking and going to the bathroom, your body is losing necessary minerals, namely sodium, potassium and magnesium. Eating food that is high in these minerals can help speed your recovery, but no food is better for this purpose than a banana. Not only is it rich in potassium, it also contains a lot of carbohydrates, which your body will need for recovery. All this in one neat yellow package. Thanks mother nature!

Tomato Juice

  Drink some Tomato Juice

A Bloody Mary was once considered a trusted hangover cure. However, drinking more when you’re hungover may make you feel better for a short while, but it will only prolong the healing process. It just so has it, what made Bloody Mary a good hangover cure wasn’t the vodka – it was the tomatoes. Much like bananas, tomatoes are rich in minerals our body needs, but unlike their yellow counterparts, tomatoes contain more water. In comparison, you will need to eat many more tomatoes to get the needed remedy. One glass of juice (with or without the Tabasco and celery stick) is made of several tomatoes, and also consists of sugar, which will give your body the energy it needs to start the day fresh.

Exercise

  Exercise

You may not want to move after a night of binge drinking. Fight the urge to stay in bed all day, and get the endorphins flowing and the blood pumping. Don’t overexert yourself, a light work-out should be enough to increase the processes in your body that are already fighting the hangover. As an added bonus, a bit of exercise will help you build a thirst and an appetite, making the other suggestions on this list easier to stomach.
